Using Mobile Phones for Campaigning
Mobile phones have been a hot topic in campaigning circles for a few years, but few organisations are yet using them regularly and in ways that are repeatable - yet some are.

I first heard of Mobile Phones and advocacy when I went to the Philipines 3 years ago. I think this is definitely the future but asks for a real capacity to adapt beyond what the web originally asked of us. But with the Philipines the results were pretty amazing and it looks like the US is moving to greater use of the mobile phones for the presidential campaign both for messaging and fundraising (as mobiles are moving to facilitate pay as you go bank transfer within and across boundaries). I think it is key discussing this and see how much it might facilitate/impact/challenge advocacy between North and South, as well as income generation from potential (new) supporters.

Oistein - Oxfam I can see the potential of this, but would be interested in learning more about the practicalities. Does text messages count for petitions? Can they be sent directly to decision makers?

I'd be interested in learning more about this. Did some research into the subject around Christmas, would like to hear from anyone who's done this for real.

We at Oxfam America tested using mobile phones a few years ago but had such bad results we haven't attempted since. Would love to learn more about how it has worked for other organizations - hopefully well!

This is a tricky one for global campaigning. Seems like there is good potential and know a few of our offices are already trying sms mobilizing. But there is no global "sms net".

Don't know if this is something that can be done on a global scale. Apart from the technological bariers, people have different ways of using their mobile phones. Has anyone had results with mobile internet?

we've done some work using mobiles as part of direct actions (http://moblog.co.uk/blogs.php?show=9068) and have start to use a text-for-info service on publicity materials. happy to share info and talk about other ideas.

Keen to look at how GCAP might use mobile phone technology to capture data from our global mobilisations. Would be good to hear how others have done with this and share ideas
